Terms of Service
Last updated: 15 July 2026
The short version. Screen Time Machine is a tool to help you use your phone less. It is not a security product and cannot force you to do anything — a determined person can get around it, and the operating system may occasionally get in its way. Buy Pro once and it's yours; billing and refunds go through your app store.
1. Agreement
These terms are between you and Steven Freville ("we", "us"), the provider of Screen Time Machine ("the app"). By installing or using the app, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
2. What the app does
Screen Time Machine lets you choose apps on your device and then interrupt, schedule blocks for, set daily limits on, or temporarily block them during a focus session. It is a self-management aid, intended to be used on your own device by you.
3. Blocking is best-effort, not a guarantee
This is the most important thing on this page, so we'd rather be blunt about it than bury it in clause 14.
Screen Time Machine works within what Android and iOS permit an ordinary app to do. It cannot guarantee that a blocked app will always be blocked. In particular:
- The operating system may stop the app's background service — for battery optimisation, memory pressure, or manufacturer-specific power management — and blocking will not run while it is stopped.
- Blocking depends on permissions you can revoke at any time. Turn off the Accessibility Service or usage access and enforcement stops.
- The app can be disabled, force-stopped or uninstalled by anyone holding the unlocked device, including you at a weak moment. There is no lock we can apply that the device's owner cannot undo.
- OS updates can change or remove the capabilities the app relies on, sometimes without notice.
Do not rely on Screen Time Machine for any purpose where a failure to block would be harmful. It is not a parental-control product, not a compliance or monitoring tool, and not a treatment for any medical or psychological condition. If you are dealing with a compulsion that is affecting your health, please talk to a qualified professional — an app that hides your icons is not a substitute for that.
4. Your licence
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the app on devices you own or control, for your own personal use, in line with these terms and your app store's terms.
5. What you agree not to do
- Use the app to monitor, restrict, or surveil another person without their knowledge and consent.
- Reverse-engineer, decompile or attempt to extract the source code of the app, except to the extent that law expressly permits it.
- Resell, sublicense, or redistribute the app.
- Use the app in violation of any applicable law.
6. Pro purchases and billing
Some features require Screen Time Machine Pro, an optional paid upgrade. The free tier remains usable indefinitely without paying.
- Lifetime is a one-time purchase. It unlocks Pro for as long as the app exists and runs on your device. It is not a promise that the app will be developed, supported, or available in the stores forever.
- Monthly is a subscription. It renews automatically until you cancel, and is charged to your store account. Cancel any time in your Google Play or Apple App Store account settings; cancelling stops the next renewal and leaves Pro active until the end of the paid period.
- Introductory offers, where shown, apply only for the stated window and on the stated plan.
Prices are shown in the app before you buy, in your local currency, and may change over time — a change never affects a lifetime purchase already made. All payments are collected and processed by Apple or Google, not by us.
7. Refunds
Refunds are handled by the store that took your payment, under its own policy — Google Play or the Apple App Store. We cannot issue refunds directly because we never receive your payment. If a store refuses a refund you believe you're owed, write to us at support@screen-time-machine.com and we'll do what we can to help. Where consumer law in your country gives you a right of withdrawal or a statutory refund right, that right stands regardless of anything in this section.
8. Restoring purchases
Pro is tied to the store account that bought it. "Restore purchases" in Settings will re-activate it on a new device signed in to the same account. We cannot restore a purchase made on a different store account, or move a purchase between Apple and Google — the two stores are separate, and a purchase in one is not recognised by the other.
9. Your data
The app stores your settings and usage figures on your device and does not transmit them to us. See the Privacy Policy for the detail. You are responsible for your device and your own backups; uninstalling the app deletes its data permanently.
10. Availability and changes
We may update the app, change or remove features, or stop distributing it. We'll try not to break things you rely on, but we don't promise the app will be available, uninterrupted or error-free.
11. Disclaimer of warranties
The app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will meet your requirements, that blocking will be uninterrupted or effective, or that defects will be corrected.
12. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, data, opportunity or goodwill, arising out of your use of — or inability to use — the app, including any consequence of the app failing to block something.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total aggregate liability arising out of these terms or the app is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you actually paid us for the app in the twelve months before the claim, or (b) €50.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited — including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or under mandatory consumer protection law in your country of residence.
13. Termination
You can end this agreement at any time by uninstalling the app. We may suspend or end your licence if you materially breach these terms. Sections 3, 11, 12 and 14 survive termination.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of France, and the courts of France have jurisdiction over any dispute. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory laws of your own country of residence, or of your right to bring proceedings there.
15. Changes to these terms
We may revise these terms. The date at the top always reflects the current version, and material changes will be surfaced in the app. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the revised terms.
